Lives and works in Antwerp (BE)

The human figure is central in Ines Laukkanen’s work. Her paintings reflect on the human experience on a personal level through recurring themes such as belonging, vulnerability, nostalgia, intimacy and alienation. The figures in her paintings, who are people from her life, are always depicted as if they’re seen through the eyes of an outsider as their gaze is never fully directed to the viewer. This creates an uncanny tension between the spectator and the work. She works with oil paint on canvas and aquarelle on paper, following classical ways of figurative painting with a contemporary approach. Inspired by the language of film, she aims to create film-still like images where the spectator has a nearly voyeuristic view of the subject. With great passion for the craft and a sensitivity to the materiality of paint, she experiments with the paint as a metaphor for the themes in her work.
